To check criminal activities of fraudsters, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is to unveil various information portals including the social media platforms like facebook, twitters and others.
A top Customs source who disclosed this to Daily Sun in a chat said the portals have become necessary because many criminal elements now use the social media, especially facebook, where they pose as authentic auctioneers, to dupe unsuspecting members of the public
He lamented that despite various electronic advertisements, some members of the public still fall pray to the fraudsters with phoney auction deals.
“Since millions of people visit the facebook and other social media almost every second, it has become important for us to hoist our flags on these social media. Since the social media space is used to dupe people in our name, we also need to use the same space to educate Nigerians and correct the anomalies. The name of the service is at stake. Many people rather than visit out websites or go any Customs formation for verification simply believe what they see on facebook”.
“A lot of these fraudsters have been apprehended and more to be nabbed. Since people find it easier to visit facebook instead of our site, then we’re also strongly present on facebook”, he stated.
Already, the Apapa Area  Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has introduced an information portal that will give stakeholders in the industry daily report on  activities of the command.
The Public Relations Officer of the command; Mr. Emmanuel Ekpa who is the brain behind the innovation, said that the effort of the Comptroller General of Customs gave rise to the innovation.
Ekpa said the site will help journalists and the general public to gather information about the command and the latest update about the Nigeria Customs Service in general.
The PRO explained that the customs in recent time,  has been subjected to  negative information from fraudsters about customs activities and added that, the first ever website created by a customs image maker will solve problems associated with misinformation by some miscreants.
He said issues like auctions of vehicles by customs which is rampant on social media will be addressed because such information is unhealthy to the service.
