Lagos State House of Assembly has urged Governor Babatunde Fashola to direct relevant agencies of government to urgently extend the installation of computer-based Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) surveillance cameras being monitored by the Lagos State Emergency Command Centre to major markets, motor parks and other public places in the state as a response to the nation’s security challenge.
The House also urged the governor to pursue the process of residents registration to create a veritable database of Lagosians.
These were part of the resolutions of the House sequel to a motion on ‘Strengthening security measures in Lagos State’ co-sponsored by Balogun Abdulbaq (Ajeromi/Ifelodun 2), Agunbiade Sanai (Ikorodu 1), Omisore Ipoola (Ifako/Ijaye 2), Ogunyemi Lanre, (Ojo 2), Tobun Abiodun (Epe 1), Olulade Segun (Epe 2) and Tejuoso Adefunmilayo..
The House also called on the governor to take over abandoned properties for overriding public interest in the state after issuing necessary notices; and discourage the assemblage of abandoned vehicles in residential and industrial areas.
It called for the strengthening of the operations of Community Development Associations (CDAs) and the Neighbourhood Watch for effective performance in crime prevention, monitoring and control and for them to collate information on abandoned projects in their various communities and report to the government for necessary action.
And that members of the House should go back to their various constituencies and hold meetings with various CDAs and CDCs as well as mobilise them towards the propagation of the measures particularly in the area of discouraging abandonment of vehicles in residential and industrial areas.
In passing the resolution, the House cited Section 14(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) which stated that ‘the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government’ and acknowledged the conscious efforts of the state government in providing infrastructure, human capacity building and fund for the procurement of security equipment towards achieving maximum security of lives and property as constitutionally stipulated.
