Newly elected Commodore of the Navy Sailing Club (NSC), Citizen
Giwa Daramola has pledged to take the club to new heights and turn it
into a centre of aquatic excellence during his term of office.
Giwa, who emerged at the club’s Annual General Meeting held at the Rock View hotel in Festact Town recently told Shalloma's that his victory is for all, stressing that it is the wish of the newly elected executives to thrive on introducing programmes that would see the club being more competitive in nature.
“Our target is to see the Navy Sailing Club, NSC become a ce
ntre of aquatic excellence. It’s also our desire to promote competition among our youth athletes and introduce more water sports to our usual, rowing, canoeing, kayaking and sailing. We intend to do our best in training local and international athletes for Nigeria in collaboration with the Nigeria Rowing, Canoeing and Yachting Federation headed by our patron Rear Admiral Festus Porbeni.”
He noted that with Nigeria’s excellent performance at the last African Youth Games held in Madagascar earlier this year, the Navy Sailing Club has no choice than to improve on the training of the athletes by providing the enabling environment for the federation and the athletes.
On programmes for the last quarter of the year, the Commodore who triumphed over his cousin, Captain Femi Kayode Daramola by 32 to 27 votes said the executive at its inaugural meeting approved a number of events, which includes the Commodore’s race billed to commence from the Ibeche beach to the Navy Sailing Club, covering a distance of eight nautical miles. “The Commodore’s race holds at the end of September and will be followed by the Frank Olo invitational that will see participants from the Lagos Yacht Club, Lagos Boat Club and some elite athletes from all over Nigeria, as well as the annual Young Shall Grow race.”
He, however, pleaded for corporate sponsors to join the NSC in ensuring that the game of water sports grows and develops in Nigeria. He pointed out that Nigeria stands to win lots of medals from water sports than any other sports especially with the next Olympics coming up in Rio 2016.
