The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has attributed Nigeria’s crash in the FIFA ranking to the recent poor results the Super Eagles got in the Africa Nations Cup qualifier matches against the duo of Red Devils of Congo and the Bafana Bafana of South Africa. While reacting to the ranking, the General Secretary of the football federation, Musa Amadu, told journalists at the Glass House yesterday that Super Eagles picking the ticket for the next year’s AFCON tournament in Morocco is more important than Nigeria’s ranking.
According to the Glass House chief scribe: “I don’t think the question should be the feelings of the federation or me concerning the recent ranking. However, let me note that the fall was as a result of the outcome of the two matches we played against Congo and South Africa. “It was a direct res
ult of those matches, considering the fact that those two teams were ranked lower than the Super Eagles. So having lost and drawn those matches, the crash was expected and a direct consequence.
“Let me, however, emphasis that FIFA ranking is secondary to the objectives of the football federation. Our main focus is to qualify for the Africa Nations Cup in Morocco next year.
“If we are able to win those four qualifier matches, including the back to back against Sudan, South Africa and Congo, to pick the tournament ticket, it would gladden the hearts of many Nigerians than the FIFA ranking.
“It is important that we work extra hard to pick the maximum points in those matches and qualify for the tournament as Africa champions,” he stated.
