Zone 2 police kill 14, arrest 82 suspects

The New Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone Two Police Command, Umar Manko, has said that his command comprising Lagos and Ogun states Police Commands killed 14 suspected armed robbers and arrested 87 others in one month. fing journalists on the monthly breakthrough recorded by his command in his Onikan office yesterday, Manko also warned officers and men of his command to desist from flouting the ban on roadblock as it had not been lifted by the Acting Inspector General of Police. Manko stated that between August 1 and September 15, his command arrested 87 armed robbers, while 14 of them died during encounters with the Anti-Robbery police teams in the two states. Also, he said 60 vehicles, were recovered, while 82 others were stolen. The AIG also stated that 38 murder cases were recorded, while 47 cultists were arrested. He attributed the achievements and breakthrough to robust relationship existing between the police and members of the public and the provision of logistics by the government of Lagos and Ogun states in aid of the police.
He said the new strategy to jointly police the boundary between the two states would go a long way to solve the problem of who polices a particular jurisdiction. “A place like the long bridge before Berger Bus stop will now be jointly manned by men and officers from Ogun and Lagos states under my control. Infact, hard times await criminals who operate in the borders between the two states,” the AIG said.
He reiterated the warning of the IGP that “the ban on roadblocks is still in force. It has not been lifted. And whoever that goes against the ban will have himself or herself to blame. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Suleiman Abba (mini) has not lifted the ban. I therefore, urge the good people to go about their lawful duties unhindered. And we will continue to adhere strictly to the mission and vision of the IGP”.
The Police Boss noted that detectives from the command’s ‘X’ Squad were already going round Lagos and Ogun states respectively which make up zone 2 to enforce the ban already put in place.
He said an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in-charge of the squad was personally taking charge regardless of uniforms and also, going round the two states to ensure strict compliance with the ban.
In addition, the AIG seized the occasion to send a warning note to erring officers and men to desist from harassing members of the public unnecessarily, thus, advising them to know their limit.
