ASUU demands for visitation panel to LASU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has made a passionate appeal to Governor Babatunde Fashola to constitute a visitation panel to the Lagos State University (LASU) and also to call the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof John Obafunwa to order.

ASUU Lagos zone which is made up of five universities also accused the VC of being behind the crisis that led to the emergence of a splinter group in ASUU-LASU.
Addressing newsmen on the leadership crisis rocking the union, the, Zonal Coordinator, ASUU Lagos Zone, Dr. Adesola Nasir, called on the visitor to LASU to intervene in the maladministration of the institution by constituting a visitation panel to the 30-year-old university.
He said, “This would commence the process of instituting permanent peace at LASU. To us, it would be a sure way to have firsthand information on the state of the university. We feel that refusal to do this would mean that the visitor supports the oppression and maladministration at LASU. For now, we still feel otherwise. This is the third time we are making the call. It is over five years the governor sent a visitation panel to LASU. Fashola has the opportunity to arrest the on-going crisis in LASU. If the VC is interested in cleaning the system, he should be the one calling for a visitation panel to investigate the rots in the system.
“What LASU needs now is a visitation panel and a lot of things will be thrown open. Our members and other sister unions will be able to submit a paper on the state of affairs of LASU. It is no longer news that LASU has become endemic for staff and students crises largely to the actions of the present administration of the university,’’
According to him, Prof Obafunwa led administration is anti people and has also become embroiled in some staff union issues and allow university organ to collude with some suspended members of the union to foment crises.
The briefing was held simultaneously with ASUU-LASU congress which was attended by 129 members who equally passed a vote of confidence on the Dr. Adekunle Idris led-exco and condemned the action of the 21 suspended members.
Briefing the congress on the situation of things as regards the splinter group, the ASUU-LASU chairman, Dr. Idris, accused the VC of orchestrating the crisis in the union and urged members to ignore any circular from Mr. Ayodele Asokere and his group.
On the splinter group, Dr. Nasir told newsmen that the ASUU Lagos zone and ASUU national recognize the Dr. Idris led exco and accused the VC of surrounding himself with people who have questionable character.
He also condemned the VC for directing the stoppage of ASUU-LASU check-off dues by acting on the letter from the suspended treasurer.
